Transforming lives through the gift of education
Last year in March, a massive fire broke out in an unauthorized slum cluster in Shahdara village, Noida. According to victims, they ran out with their children, leaving behind all their belongings to turn to ashes. Everything was lost. Most of the slum dwellers were daily wagers and domestic helpers. A girl from this slum approached us for educational support. On our insistence she brought 15 more kids from her place after around 9 months, who were keen to study but lacked the means to do so.
Their parents were struggling endlessly to make the ends meet and provide for the basic necessities like food and shelter. Most of the kids didn’t even knew the fundamentals of Hindi and English reading and writing. We consistently worked hard to let them meet the standards, preparing them for the interview and written tests for the next admission session. We visited several schools in the vicinity, short-listing the best options for them. Fortunately all our children cleared the entrance exams and got admitted to an English medium school. We counselled their parents to send their kids to school regularly and sponsored for their admissions, uniforms, books and stationary items. We provide our children post-school coaching to assist them in learning, keeping a check on their progress. They arrive directly from school to our Ushakiran study centre. We routinely provide them healthy refreshments as an incentive to be disciplined and regular for the classes. Recently the school principal gave a call praising our children for their excellent progress in school performance.
Previously due to weak basics they were enrolled in class 1 and 2 but now as a true appreciation of their efforts and hard work, they will be promoted to the respective classes as per their age. Through our efforts, we feel honored to have given a new beginning, new rays of hope and a priceless gift of education to the children who went through unfortunate times, wholeheartedly wishing them to emerge as victorious and successful adults in future.
